Four Success Keys to Becoming a Black Belt:

1. BELIEF: There are three levels to the "success key" of belief. First is believing in yourself. Do I believe I can do it? If you are younger, this also means your parents believe you can do it. Your parents may ask: Do we believe he or she can do it? Finally, your instructors need to believe you can become a black belt. Does sensei believe I can become a black belt? "If you can Dream it and Believe it, you can Achieve it."

2. COMMITMENT: Am I truly committed to becoming a black belt or am I just interested in the idea? If you are truly committed to your goal you can always find a way to persevere and make it happen. If you are only interested in it, you will most likely lose focus and forget your goal. Anyone who has made it to black belt has had their share of days where they didn't feel like going to class or doing what needed to be done. It was their commitment that got them to follow through and take the appropriate action that made the difference.
If you are younger, this also means your parents need to be committed. Your parents are the ones who will be getting you to classes, paying your tuition and supporting you through the process. We know grateful people tend to be the happiest people. How grateful are you? Imagine how good you and your parents would feel if you decided to practice an "attitude of gratitude" by regularly thanking your parents for their commitment and support. Without the commitment of your parents you would not be able to reach your goal of black belt. Don't they deserve your thanks?
In addition, your sensei and your other instructors need to be fully committed to giving you the best instruction, support and guidance possible. In the end, you'll be able to say "we did it together."

3. CHALLENGE: It will be a challenge to become a black belt. There will be challenges that come up for you along the way. There will be challenges for your parents and instructors. There will be things that seem difficult, new, and even scary. Are you willing to meet the challenges and grow through them? Remember, "A black belt is a white belt that never gave up."
Imagine how good you will feel about yourself knowing that you are the kind of person who is willing to do the uncomfortable thing if it means growing. Courage is not fearlessness, it is overcoming fear. A Black Belt is someone who learns to actually look forward to the things in life that will test and challenge them. They see a challenge as an opportunity to learn and grow. "No mistakes, no experience. No experience, no wisdom."

4. PERSONAL EXCELLENCE, BLACK BELT EXCELLENCE Becoming a Black Belt means a commitment to "Personal Excellence." What does Personal Excellence mean to you? Brian Tracy has said, "The quality of your life will be determined by the depth of your commitment to excellence more than by any other factor. Every day in every way practice getting better and better." How committed are you to BEING your Best, DOING your Best, and BECOMING your Best each day?
We know that excellence in any field is the result of countless efforts of self-development over an extended period of time. A Black Belt is a person who is always learning, growing and giving their best. Won't it be interesting to watch how your personal expression of "Black Belt Excellence" expresses itself in your life or child's life? As a martial artist you are learning to bring this quality alive in everything you do, wherever you are.
Simply put, you find that being your best and doing your best become more and more the natural thing. The result is you feel good about yourself, perform better, and connect to experiencing and sharing more of what's possible in this life.
